What is Neurolinguistic Programming, and Why Should I Care

Neurolinguistic programming is an alternative approach to psychotherapy and is an interpersonal communication model that was created in the 1970s.

Another way to describe it is the study of the structure of the subjects experience and what can be calculated from it and is predicated upon the belief that all behavior has some structure.

It is difficult to explain exactly what it is because the linguists and the mathematician who came up with it were interested in several things successful people, psychology, language and computer programming. Those who started this and those who are were involved in this used vague and ambiguous language saying Neurolinguistic programming means different things to different people.

Since the models that constitute NLP describes how the human being’s brain functions, they are used in order to teach them. Therefore it is not a diagnostic tool. It can only be applied and therefore taught experimentally.

They are not taught by technique after technique, however they are taught by installation from a well-trained Neuro Linguistic Programmer.

One theme keeps re-occurring in the definition is it helped people change by teaching them to program their brains. Were told we were given the brains but not the instruction manuals and Neurolinguistic programming is the instruction manual for the brain.

Neurolinguistic programming relies heavily, either subconsciously or consciously, on three things, one – the notion of the unconscious mind as a constantly influencing conscious thought and action and two metaphoric speech and behavior, especially building on Freud’s interpretation of dreams and third hypnotherapy.

The basic principle of Neurolinguistic programming is that the words we use in everyday language, reflects an inter, subconscious insight of our problems. If these words and perceptions are mistaken, as long as we continue to use them and think of them, the underlying problem will persist. In other words our attitudes are, in a sense, a self-fulfilling prophecy.
